December 20, 2016

The Irvington Fire Department is sad to announce the passing of 51 year life active member Donald Costello. During his service to the community Donald has held the position of Captain of Fire Prevention, teaching members of the community the lessons of fire safety and prevention. Donald has been a daily fixture at the firehouse inviting visitors in to tour the firehouse. The department will miss Don greatly.

In honor of Donald's service to the community, The Village of Irvington declared May 18th 2015 "Donald Costello Day"

Donald E. Costello, loving husband, father and grandpa, passed peacefully on December 18, 2016. Don was 80 years old.

A life-long resident of Irvington, Don was a familiar sight in town – at the post office, the fire department, the History Center, the Senior Center, at the park, and up and down Main Street. All were near and dear to him, as were his beloved yet beleaguered Mets and Jets. Don was also very proud of his service to our country, serving in the Army up in Alaska during the Cold War as he monitored the air and sea activity of the Russians.

Don leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Florence, his daughters Pam and Karen, his sons-in-law Bob and David, and grandsons Will, Shaw and Max.

A wake will be held at Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry on Wednesday, December 21 from 2-4 & 7-9pm. A Chapel service will be held at the Funeral Home on Thursday morning, December 22 at 10:30am.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to either the Irvington Fire Department, or the Irvington History Center.
